Jonah’s Salvation through God’s Compassion
Click here to hear today's Bible passage read by Maureen Glen; scripture from the last of the 4 chapters in the book of Jonah in the Old Testament.
Earlier in the book of Jonah God had threatened the destruction of the city of Niniveh because of their wickedness and sought Jonah to preach to them against their wicked ways. However Jonah resisted God's instruction and ran away, attempting to escape aboard a ship to the city of Tarshish. The story of the ship in a storm subsequently brought out of danger by the crew throwing Jonah overboard, having suspected him of bringing God's wrath on them by his disobedience is well known. Jonah's ultimate salvation came from his distressed prayers to God and his promise to fulfil the task God originally set for him.
God's grace and compassion towards Jonah teaches us how we in turn can show grace and compassion towards others, sometimes despite anger towards us, with rewarding results.
