Kirkliston Vision 2018 – 2022

Kirkliston Vision Countdown ….

Connections!

We are starting 2018 with a vision for reaching people in our community with the gospel in a new and different way so we can say alongside the apostle Paul I have become all things to all men so that by all possible means I might save some.’

 (1 Cor: 9-22)

Our community has grown to include more and more new families in recent years, and we, as church, are placed to get alongside them to support them and live out our faith amongst them. This presents us with both opportunities and challenges of what it means to be church today amidst a fast moving society where all our cultural norms and patterns of worship are being questioned.

The church has been a faithful witness in this community for over 800 years, adapting our worship, service and buildings as necessary with each subsequent generation of seekers and worshippers.

Along with the minister the Kirk Session has been prayerfully seeking the way forward and listening for God’s leading and instruction and believe God’s timing and favour is in this, God is with us, and so have agreed to make changes to our services of worship – including         introducing a new type of service or gathering.   These changes will be launched on Sunday 7th of January 2018 – a New Year with a new start.

A traditional service of worship will take place in the church at 10.15am finishing around 11am followed by coffee and fellowship in the Church Centre as normal; so, a slightly earlier start and a more    traditional style of service. At this point we are unable to offer a children’s programme alongside this service, however, all children are welcome to remain with their parents throughout the service should this be their preferred option or choice on the day

A new informal, contemporary type of worship service ‘CONNECTIONS” will take place in the Church Centre hall from 11.30am. People will be free to come and go as they wish, coffee is available throughout and a children’s programme will be available. We will aim to conclude the  service between12.3012.45pm, and, all are invited to stay and share a simple lunch together. This will be a time given to building relationships, and, folks from the first service can choose to stay on for this.

The congregations will come together at different points in the year for a single blended service –  e.g. Holy Communion (4), Remembrance Day and Christmas Day, but fellowship is encouraged throughout.

Everyone is invited to worship in whichever service they wish and some may choose to do both, or alternate. The vision includes reaching out to others who have little or no experience of church, inviting them along and being an expression of church for those who might not necessarily connect with a more traditional model, some of whom already access some of our projects in the church centre. So this will be a familiar environment for them to transition into.

This is an open-ended trial; we have set no time limit for it, but, will seek to monitor how it progresses, and you are encouraged to pray into this vision and support it. It is Jesus who promises to build his church, we are simply called to ‘go and make disciples.’ It is an exciting time for us as we wait before the Lord knowing ‘apart from me you can do nothing. If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish and it will be given to you. This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.’ (John15:7-8).

In the book of Nehemiah the people caught the vision to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem and fully supported it and got behind it, ‘So they    began this good work.’ Can I encourage you all to do likewise? Let’s begin this good work together.
